Amethyst

My roommate just got back from a trip in England and she brought me a piece of amethyst on a cord necklace. I have always had a kind of love for this stone. No matter what state it's in, polished or rough it's always beautiful. So I always knew amethyst brings good luck, but I wanted to know the full story on this stone... so I googled some things. What I found was actually pretty funny and ironic in a way.

In Greek mythology
Dionysus, the god of wine and song, was angry and vowed to slay the first mortal who crossed his path. That unlucky mortal was Amethyst, a beautiful maiden.
However, Artemis (goddess of virginity and the hunt) intervened and transformed Amethyst into white stone. When Dionysus saw what had happened, he repented and poured wine over the stone, staining the top of it purple. That is why the top of amethyst is purple and the bottom is white.
Though the story has other variations such as: The Goddess Diana transformed a beautiful young maiden, Amethyst, into a statue of pure quartz in an effort to protect her from vicious tigers created by the vengeful God, Dionysus. Dionysus having looked upon the results of his actions wept remorseful tears of wine upon the statue endowing the stone with the rich purple hue we know today. Dionysus as it happens was the God of Intoxication.

Amethyst purportedly Brings luck, Ensures constancy, Protects against magic, Prevents home-sickness, Protects against drunkenness, (the Greek word amethustos means "not drunk")
Leonardo da Vinci wrote that the gem dissipates evil thoughts and quickens the intelligence -- high praise indeed.

Night one of wearing the stone...no such luck. Maybe it takes a few days to fully kick in...
Oh well...at least it still looks cool :)

The Best Blog Ever!

So tonight I was doing my research like usual and came across the coolest blog I think I have seen yet. Its borderline fashion/art. This girl has a lot of guts to travel the U.S. and make clothing out of state symbols. Here are some of the pics I robbed from her because they are just too cool to be true. An inspiration to me for sure :)

"MINNESOTA: "Corn Dress" was created in September of 2004, while I was an artist-in-residence at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center in New York Mills, Minnesota, supported in part by a grant from the Jerome Foundation. "Corn Dress" was created with a 14-foot-tall welded steel frame, complete with a built-in ladder. It was 6-foot wide at its base. This sculpture was made possible by the hands of many wonderful volunteers, in a corn field belonging to Ray Sonnenberg and Brian Sillanpa of Homestead Valley Estates. Photo by Kevin Cederstrom."  Here are a few of my other fav states...

Why I love Soho

Every time I wander around Soho I am reminded of why I love it sooooo much. Seriously, I don't think I could live anywhere else in the city. Soho is so chill, artsy, and a bit grungy in a fashionable way. Days off, I love you...why can't I have you more often?

F.Y.I. I took all these pics with a blackberry camera... :P

I wanna rock

Friday night we rocked Mug with another Pamela Quinzi Design fashion show. Mug was a little hipster artist lounge in the East Village. The makeup, hair and clothes were all inspired by rock. The band Do You See In The Dark had a little mini album preview during the show.

 More pics to come
